There it was on page 45 of Private Eye. The travel advertisements were, after the obligatory review of all the best cartoons, somehow my favourite part of the content of that august periodical, which I would purchase from my local newsagent every fortnight on the very day of publication, taking it straight away to the nearby cafe for a celebratory triple cappuccino with, of course, something sweet from the counter. Although actually, on this occasion, I happened to be in London, frequenting an unfamiliar vendor, and buying coffee from one of those Costa places to take back to my hotel room for a good read and a chortle before thinking about lunch. A weighty process indeed.
— Professor Max Maartinesz
I really never intended to write about my own disturbing experience with that imposter of a travel agency, Propitious Peregrinations. But then I read the account by Max Maartinesz of his adventures, and I felt it imperative that people should know what can happen to you, when, no doubt innocently, perhaps, as in my own case, out of sheer curiosity, you step into the middle of something that can prove to be quite overwhelming. I mean that in every sense of the word.
— Lillian Selby (Miss)

Where did you last go on holiday? At the beach in Nice, Malibu, Bondi, Ipanema? Sampling the produce of Scottish distilleries, or French, South African or Californian vineyards? Hiking in the Appalachians or the Himalaya? Exploring nature in the Amazon or Borneo? On a safari in the Serengeti? Checking out world wonders in Egypt or Mexico or Peru? On a cruise?

We’re sure you had a wonderful time. But was it really worth it?

You put yourself to a lot of trouble taking that vacation: booking flights, hotels and rental cars or other transportation. Even if a travel agent did it all for you, you still had to compare agencies or deals online or in the newspaper travel supplement. Then you had to pack your clothes and drag your luggage through air or seaports.

And at the end of it, you had a holiday that was at best mundane.

Propitious Peregrinations ® can change all that. We can arrange everything, and we do mean everything, for you. All you bring is yourself. And we guarantee a uniquely memorable experience.

It was, I have to admit, something of a relief for me to have a little time to myself. I was certainly quite fond of this delightful lady, and I did appreciate the the opportunity of having an honest and understanding exchange regarding our common eventful expeditions. At the same time, I had the distinct impression that she was far from enamoured of my enjoyment of the odd glass - well, all right, bottle - of fermented beverages.
— Max Maartinesz
Max, as I was getting used to call and think of him, certainly did drink a lot. At the same time, I found him to be very sympathetic. He seemed to be genuinely touched by my story and my concerns. He also thankfully remained quite lucid.
— Lillian Selby
